Elkonin Jumping Game:
Skills Practiced:
- Phonemic segmentation
- Gross motor skills
- Following directions
- One-to-one correspondence
Materials Needed:
- Large picture cards of words that have 2-3 sounds (avoid blends and controlled r)
- Three squares of carpet or construction paper, each about 12”by 12”
- One rectangular piece of carpet or construction paper, about 12” by 24″
Procedure:
- First explain rules to children and practice
- Children form a line behind the carpet squares
- Teacher holds up picture card
- One child at a time jumps from square to square saying each sound in the word out loud
- Child finishes by saying the entire word and jumping on the rectangle
- Only one child jumps at a time, but all children should say sounds along with the jumper.
