Elkonin Jumping Game

Elkonin Jumping Game:

Skills Practiced:

  • Phonemic segmentation
  • Gross motor skills
  • Following directions
  • One-to-one correspondence

Materials Needed:

  • Large picture cards of words that have 2-3 sounds (avoid blends and controlled r)
  • Three squares of carpet or construction paper, each about 12”by 12”
  • One rectangular piece of carpet or construction paper, about 12” by 24″

Procedure:

  • First explain rules to children and practice
  • Children form a line behind the carpet squares
  • Teacher holds up picture card
  • One child at a time jumps from square to square saying each sound in the word out loud
  • Child finishes by saying the entire word and jumping on the rectangle
  • Only one child jumps at a time, but all children should say sounds along with the jumper.
