Mystery Word:

Skills Practiced:

  • Name recognition
  • Phonological awareness (beginning and ending sounds)
  • Sequencing (concepts of “first” and “last”)
  • Oral language
  • Social skills
  • Cognitive flexibility

Materials Needed:

  • Name cards
  • Picture card (2- and 3- sound words)
  • Laminated sound cards (Elkonin boxes) for 2- and 3- sound words

Procedure:

  • Children find their name cards
  • Children look at the “clue” card
  • Children say the “clue” word and then say each choice aloud

                      -They then decide on their response, and place   their name under it

  • Teacher reviews the right answer and summarizes the responses later in large group
